RATE CHALLENGE RESEARCH

Surveys

What are people thinking about when it comes to home loans and the cost of owning a home?

We ask people using Rate Challenge a few simple questions, look at their answers and compare what we find with the wider Australian market.

HOW WE USE THE ANSWERSReal questions. Useful observations.

These are informal, voluntary website surveys — not national polls. They give us another way to understand the borrowing decisions people are weighing up.

HOME LOAN REPAYMENTS

How much of your pay would the home loan take?

We asked people how much of their take-home income they expected to spend on home loan repayments. The results raise some interesting questions about loan sizes, household budgets and how well people understand what a mortgage could cost them.

Includes repayment examples, seven charts, state observations and comparisons with official Australian figures.

ABOUT THE SURVEYS

What the results can — and can’t — tell us

01

What we’re hearing

The answers offer an early look at the costs, decisions and concerns people are working through when they use our calculators and research tools.

02

Why it’s useful

Official figures tell us what’s happening across Australia. Our surveys add a smaller view of what individual website visitors are considering right now.

03

Keep it in perspective

People choose whether to respond. The results don’t represent all Australian borrowers, and a calculator estimate isn’t necessarily an existing loan. We explain these limits in each report.

We’ll keep asking questions.

As we publish more surveys, their reports will be added here. Each will include the dates, the number of responses and enough detail to make sense of the results.
